Bhai Dooj Gifts
Send Bhai Dooj Tikka Gift To Brother Or Sister
The name 'Dooj' means the second day after the new moon and 'Bhai' means brother. Bhai Dooj is celebrated by Hindus of India and Nepal on the second lunar day of Shukla Paksha in the Vikram Samvat Hindu calendar month of Kartika. It is celebrated every year on the fifth and last day of Diwali during the Diwali or Tihar festival. In the southern part of India, the day is celebrated as Yama Dwitiya.
The celebrations of this day are similar to Raksha Bandhan. The essence of the Bhai Dooj festival is to strengthen the love between brothers and sisters. It is a day of food-sharing, gift-giving and reaching out to the innermost depths of the heart. Brothers and sisters exchange gifts between them on this day. Traditionally, Bhai dooj is applicable for brothers of married women.
According to folklore, the God of Death - Yama once visited his sister Yami or Yamuna on this day. Yami welcomed him by doing an aarti and tilak ceremony and also offered him a beautiful garland, sweets, and Yama in return showered her with gifts. After the ceremony, Yama declared that all the brothers who are applied tilak by their sisters would never be fearful of life. This is probably how the tradition of celebrating Bhai Dooj began which is also known as Yama Dwitiya.
Another popular story in the Hindu mythology about Bhai Dooj is when Lord Krishna returned to his sister Subhadra after killing demon king Narakasur, he was welcomed with tilak, aarti, flowers, and sweets.
Nowhere is the bond of brotherly-sisterly love glorified with such grandeur as in India. On Bhai Dooj, girls do 'Tika Ceremony' which is the highlight of the festival where sisters apply vermilion, curd and raw rice on the forehead of their brothers - as a mark of love and protection from evil forces. After this, the sisters do an aarti and offer sweets to their brothers. They also pray for each other's happiness and prosperity and sisters are lavished with presents as a token of gratitude.
