About Lumba Rakhi
In this blog, we are going to talk about the Lumba Rakhi, and why it is gaining popularity these days. The Lumba Rakhi is an unusual type of Rakhi, which is meant for the sister-in-laws (your brother’s wife or bhabhi).
The sisters tie these Rakhis to the wrists of the sister-in-laws. These Rakhis can be commonly seen in the hands of women in Rajasthan, where they wear these Rakhis along with the bangles. The tradition of the Lumba Rakhis mainly originated from Rajasthan, but nowadays, it has become quite popular. Women all over the country can be seen sporting these Rakhis on Raksha Bandhan.
The Lumba Rakhis are quite different than traditional Rakhis regarding appearance. These Rakhis are more slender, and vibrant than the traditional Rakhis which are meant for boys, and men. The vibrant colour of these Rakhis makes them more beautiful when they are complimented with the colourful traditional Indian attire.
Principal significances of Lumba Rakhis
There are a lot of other significances of the Lumba Rakhi, but in this blog, we are going to discuss the three most important consequences, which play a huge role in the traditional Indian setup:
- The first sign that comes on our list and arguably the most important of the three is the fact that the Lumba Rakhi helps to bind the family even more. As discussed above already, joint families were and still are a social norm in our country. Living in a joint family, one has to sacrifice many things. The teenagers are not given much freedom of their own, and they always have to listen to their elders. But in the modern age, all of this seems absurd, and it does not take much time for things to go out of hand.Fortunately, on the day of Raksha Bandhan, the Lumba Rakhi helps to tie the family a bit more, as the sisters not only tie the Rakhis to the wrists of the brothers but also to the wrists of the sister-in-laws. This day provides for much-needed recreation, and also helps to solidify the relationship of the sister to her brother and sister-in-law.
- We chose to give the second place to the fact that the Lumba Rakhi helps to secure the marriage. As tying a Rakhi signifies, love and loyalty, tying a Lumba Rakhi signify wishing a happily married life. The tradition of the Lumba Rakhi goes Way back, and then the women were not as independent as they are today. So by tying the Lumba Rakhi, it was shown that the bride is now an integral part of the family and that she has hair support. Even now, emotional support for the newly married wife is a huge boost to her confidence.
- The third place on our list goes to Ardhangini. It means the half of a man’s body. Hindus believe that after marriage, the wife becomes a part of the person, and more precisely half of him. The Lumba Rakhi signifies that she is accepted in his family and that she along with her husband can now sit for pujas and aartis.
